Half of Garda Regions in Ireland Report An Increase in Burglaries

The CSO has released their latest crime statistics, reporting up until the end of September 2019.  Burglaries have been consistently decreasing in recent years, but they levelled off in Q3 of this year with just 19 fewer burglaries and related offences, compared to the same period last year.

Looking at the different regions across the country, it makes for mixed reading. Two regions (Dublin and the Western Region) saw decreases, but the Eastern, Northern and South Eastern Regions all saw increases in Q3 of this year.

Going more granular, we see similarly mixed results. Half of the Garda divisions in Ireland saw an increase in break-ins compared to Q3 2018. Laois / Offaly was the only Garda Division to have the same results compared to last year.

Garda Divisions with increases in burglaries in Q3 2019 compared to Q3 2018:

  • Cavan / Monaghan
  • Donegal
  • Mayo
  • Galway
  • Roscommon / Longford
  • Cork West
  • Kerry
  • Wicklow
  • Westmeath
  • Kildare
  • Tipperary
  • Wexford
  • Waterford
  • Dublin West

Dublin which equates for 45% of all reported burglaries in Ireland had a decrease in every region except for in Dublin West, which increased by 19% year on year. Overall burglaries decrease by 7% across Dublin compared to Q3 of 2018. However, breaks-ins year to date across Dublin have remained roughly the same.

Wicklow and Westmeath have had the biggest percentage increases compared to July – Sept of last year; up 51% and 49% respectively. This time last year the Wicklow Garda Division had the 13th highest level of burglaries, but in Q3 of 2019, it was the sixth highest in the country, behind Kildare and four Dublin divisions.

The western region of the country remains the safest in the country, the Glare Garda Division also reported the biggest decrease in country from 2018, down 44%.

How Safe Are HomeSecure Customers?

We’re delighted to report that HomeSecure customers were 12.6 times safer than the national average from January – September. The Gardaí recently revealed that advancements in home security technology have led to a decrease in burglaries in certain areas and we know burglars will avoid homes or business that clearly states it’s HomeSecure Monitored.

It has to be remembered that this is one of the busiest times of the year for burglars. Over the Christmas period, we often leave the home empty for a large periods of time, visiting family or just going out enjoying the festivities. We urge HomeSecure customers to stay vigilant over the coming weeks and always remember to set your system. If you’re in for the night enjoying a Christmas movie and some mulled wine, set your system to the Stay Mode and if you’re out remember to switch on the Away Mode. Remember you can always the status of your system on your app!

*12.6 times figure is taken from the most recent census statistics that show a population of 4,761,865 with 2.75 people per household, which equates to 1,731,587 households. With 12,078 break ins from Jan – Sept of 2019. The percentage of households that had a burglary in Ireland from Q1 – Q3 was 0.69%, which is 12.6 times higher than HomeSecure customers experienced.
